The hyacinth macaw is a cobalt-blue giant parrot. A characteristic feature of the macaw species is the bright yellow color around the eyes, on the soles of the feet, and on the corner of the beak. This is one of the most attractive parrots in the macaw family and they are certainly the largest. It is the largest flying parrot of all parrots. The male parrots, originally from Brazil, Paraguay, and Bolivia, are more than 40 inches long.

The bird is a striking cobalt color all over its body, with a bright yellow ring around the eyes and a yellow ring around the corners of its beak. These are often referred to as “blue macaws”. Hyacinth is not twice as large as other large macaws, but because of their large personality, they stand out when other macaws are present.

Native Region / Natural Habitat

The macaws lives mainly in rainforest border shrubs. but their ecosystem includes large grasslands and lightly forested areas too. They are an endangered species of parrots. Today, there are about 2,500 to 5,000 hyacinth macaws left in the world. Destroying their environment, hunting for feathers and food, and illegal hunting for the pet trade have all contributed to the decline in the number of hyacinths. Eggs and chicks also have natural predators.

The reason, why these birds are so rare in the wild and in the pet trade, is that they grow much slower than other birds. Babies leave the nest at about 13 weeks, but they do not fully mature for another six months. Breeding begins at about 7 years of age. These birds can live for more than 60 years if properly cared for.

Actions And Programs That Run To Protect

Many programs are in place to conserve macaws and this project has been running for 10 years. World Wildlife Fund Together works with Brazil is pursuing a defense program to protect macaws. The project involves working with local landowners to monitor parrots, build artificial nests, and protect them.
